Say I walk into a little cafe here in Round Rock, Texas. Nothing fancy, just good coffee and the kind of pie that your doctor warns you about. And in the space of about 30 seconds, I get three versions of the Texan handshake. The first guy stands up, looks me dead in the eye, firm grip, one good pump, and a simple morning. The second will give you a nod of the head, fingers brushing the brim of his cap, and a quiet howdy, sir. And you've also felt the limp, distracted handshake that says maybe I should hang on to my wallet for now. Here's the thing, the Texan handshake isn't really about the hands. It's about presence, respect, and straight talk. Presence, respect, straight talk. Those three things right there are hiding inside every greeting that we give. As for presence, are you actually in the moment or just going through the motions? As for respect, do you recognize the other person as worthy of your full attention, regardless of who they are or what they do? And then there's the straight talk.
