me take you there. It's late afternoon on a Texas summer day. The sun's finally sliding down the sky, but it's still hot enough that your glass of iced tea is sweating harder than you are. You're on a porch. Could be yours, could be a neighbor's. Ceiling fan turning lazy circles and cicadas singing back up, and across from you sits somebody older. Could be your granddad or your aunt, an old coach, or that neighbor who's seen a few more miles of road than you have. You didn't come over for a lecture, and you came over to say hello. Instead you get something else. A story. A question. A gentle and sometimes not so gentle nudge. Son, if you keep heading down that road, where do you think it ends? Or maybe it's darling, you're selling yourself short. You're capable of a whole lot more than this. There's no podium, no PowerPoint, just truth spoken in love from one Texan to another.

Go back to frontier days, small communities, wide open spaces, and the constant reality that if folks didn't step up beyond their own fence line, everybody suffered. Somebody had to organize the barn raising, somebody had to call the posse when trouble rode into town, and somebody had to notice the quiet kid with a talent in urging him or her into something bigger. Look, most of that didn't happen in meeting rooms. It happened on porches, at feed stores, in church parking lots, and in school hallways.

Even today, when our lives are crowded with screens and notifications, the most powerful leadership moments still look a lot like that front porch scene. A teacher staying after class with a student who's hanging by a thread. Maybe it's a business owner taking fifteen minutes to encourage a young employee, or a pastor or a neighbor sitting down with a couple whose marriage is on the rocks. A mom or dad choosing to have a hard conversation instead of just hoping it works out. Understand, titles don't change lives, but conversations do. And that's the heart of the front porch leadership. Create one front porch moment on purpose, and might actually be on a porch, could be at the dinner table, or could be in the cab of a truck, or even during a quiet walk. Identify one person who needs a word from you. That's where your tax and edge can make all the difference.
