Neighbors First And Why It Matters

Neighbors first. Hi there, I'm Tweet Scott back with another edition of The Texan Edge. You know, there's an old saying in Texas, you can argue with your neighbor all day long, but you had better be the first one there when they need help. I know that sounds simplistic, maybe even a little old-fashioned, but out here, it's still true.

A Quiet Ranch Land Feud

Out on a stretch of ranch land not too far from where the pavement ends and the dust really starts to take over, two families had been at odds for years. Not loudly, not dramatically, just steady, quiet tension, fences, water access, a boundary line that somehow seemed to move depending upon who you asked. Every conversation was a little shorter than it used to be, every interaction a little more guarded. And it wasn't anything new. Disagreements like that have a long history in Texas. Land always has a way of doing that. But so does pride. And most of the time folks just learn to live with it. You keep your distance, mind your business, and get on with your work. And for a while, that's exactly what they did.

When The Storm Turns Dangerous

Until one evening the sky changed. If you've lived in Texas long enough, you know the signs. The air gets heavy, the wind shifts, the horizon darkens in a way that tells you this just isn't going to be another passing storm. This one means business. It rolls in fast. The kind of storm that turns the sky green and the wind mean. The kind that doesn't give you time to even prepare at all. Just time to react. Before long, fences are down, cattle are scattered, tin roofing peeled back like paper, and in the middle of all of it, one of the ranchers took a bad fall trying to secure a gate in the wind. Now here's where things could have gone one way, but in Texas, they usually go around another.

Help Comes From Across The Line

The call for help didn't go out to a stranger. It didn't go to someone miles away. It went across that disputed line, and the response wasn't hesitation. It was immediate. Within minutes, engines turned over, headlights cut through the rain, boots hit the mud, flashlights swung through sheets of water. Hands went to work, lifting, fixing, gathering, steadying. No one brought up the argument. No one mentioned the fence. No one said a word about who was right or who was wrong, because in that moment none of that crap mattered. What mattered was simple. A neighbor needed help, and by the time the storm passed the damage was still there, but the worst of it had been handled. The cattle were mostly accounted for. The injured rancher was on his way to get care, and when the two sides that hadn't spoken in months were standing in the same muddy field shoulder to shoulder, catching their breath. Not as rivals, as Texans. That's something you don't always see from the outside.

Redefining Independence The Texas Way

People talk about independence like it means standing alone, like strength is measuring by how little you need anyone else. But here it means something entirely different. It means being strong enough to handle your own and wise enough to show up for someone else. Even when it's complicated, even when there's history. Especially then. The fence still needed fixing the next day, and it was. And by this time, I didn't feel like a line dividing two sides. It felt like something being rebuilt together. Because once you stood shoulder to shoulder in a storm, it's a lot harder to stand on opposite sides of a line. That's just the Texan way. We don't pretend disagreements don't exist. Heck yeah, you know they do. We just don't let them define who we are when all of that counts. Let me tell you something. We love our neighbors. And it's always neighbors first. That's just how the way it is in Texas. It's always been that way, and I imagine it always will
